SEYMOUR, Wisc. You are invited to celebrate the grand opening of the new Seymour Community Museum from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 21, 2012. The new $1.2 million museum/learning center was funded entirely through donations and is the culmination of a huge cooperative effort involving the Seymour Community Historical Society, city officials, community groups, businesses and individual citizens.

Marge Coonen, longtime historical society member and treasurer, summed up the feelings of the board members. “We are thrilled with the facility. It is an example of many people from different generations pulling together to improve our community and preserve the history of Seymour. It is a great addition to the downtown.”

The new museum is located on Depot St. in downtown Seymour, next to the current Seymour Community Museum, In addition to being nearly double the size of the present museum, the new facility features the following:

    • A welcome video featuring a computer-generated version of Seymour’s namesake, Horatio Seymour .
    • An archives/research room where people can not only research the history of Seymour but their family ancestry as well.
    • A large multi-purpose room that can be used for educational and community programs.
    • Interactive and participative displays.

“This facility is much more than a museum,” said Bill Collar, current president and founding member of the Seymour Historical Society. “Our vision is that this is not just a place to view items from the past, but where people of all ages can enjoy a unique and informative hands-on history experience. Thanks to the generosity of this community, the new Seymour Community Museum will benefit residents today and in the future.”

The current museum, the former Miller-Piehl office building, will continue to be used for displays and storage. Future plans call for the first floor to be converted into an old-time country store display.

The schedule for the grand opening is as follows:

1 pm: Welcome and opening remarks

    1:30 pm: Official ribbon-breaking ceremony

1:00 to 4:00 pm: Guided museum tours, refreshments and music by Starwood.
